Grade School

Detailed Writing

This was the first assignment I developed to encourage students to write with detailed descriptions and to enjoy the process of writing. This assignment is short, and the subject matter is familiar, as the student chooses the place he or she wants to write about. I again added a fun twist: I handed out a sheet of “Where Am I?” paragraphs to each student, and we made a game out of guessing the answers.

You must create a paragraph about a place. Don’t reveal what you are writing about because Julie and her students will try to figure it out. Try to paint a picture with your writing so that the reader feels that he or she is with you. The other part of the assignment is to use three or less passive verbs (am, is, are, was, were, have, has, had, been, being, etc.) I look forward to guessing!
